The Trump Administration to Issue 50% Food Stamp Benefits in the Coming Month

The federal government announced it would grant limited aid to millions of food stamp beneficiaries as the continuing government shutdown neared a record-breaking length.

Funding Cut Specifics

Amid increasing anxiety for the around 42 million individuals enrolled in the food assistance program, the USDA indicated it would employ contingency funds to continue payments, albeit at only 50% of the standard allotment participants typically receive.

Funding for the program legally ran out on Saturday due to the budget standoff, now in its 34th day with little indication of ending.

Judicial Developments

The announcement came in a judicial submission after previous denials to provide emergency funding on purported legal grounds. A court had determined the leadership could not refuse program funds because of the shutdown.

After the legal directive, the executive branch declared it would be "pleased" to authorize necessary funding for the program.

Execution Hurdles

Authorities suggested that funds could begin distribution by midweek, but stressed the need for further guidance from the legal system on how to legally reallocate money for SNAP assistance.

  • Various local governments have warned it will take days or even weeks to distribute benefits to low-income recipients.
  • Extended lines have been reported at charities throughout the nation.
  • In multiple locations, large venue areas were repurposed into help locations.

State Emergency Measures

Several authorities, including New York, Oregon, and Virginia, declared crisis measures to allocate temporary resources for support. However, these allocations were anticipated to be a small portion of the normal government funding.

The government costs for SNAP reach approximately $8 billion per month in the United States.
