A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing such medications should be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
People who have discontinued the medication explain a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
